To epitomize the fun and expression of Fling's brand, each character sequence in the sticker set was carefully crafted. The goal was to create relatable emotions that would enhance the interaction between users and the app itself. Drawing inspiration from anime and animated gif memes, the stickers capture playful exaggerations of expressions and emotions.
The design team, led by Steve Roberts, faced several challenges in creating the sticker set. They had to successfully convey a wide range of emotions within a 250 x 250 pixel bounding box while keeping the file size as small as possible. Despite these constraints, the team managed to create 29 stickers that effectively depict key body and facial traits.
Users of Fling can choose from the sticker set to send to each other using the in-app chat function. This feature adds a unique and engaging element to the user experience, setting Fling apart from other social media applications.
The project, which took place in London from August to October 2015, involved extensive research on the emoticons already used in the in-app chat function. This research ensured that the stickers fulfilled their intended function. The design team, including animation expert Pierre Joshua, worked diligently to bring the sticker set to life.
The exceptional design of Fling's custom animated sticker set has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, this design contributes to improving the quality of life for users, making the world a better place.
